We’re no Tim Hortons!
Have you ever had a latte from Tim Hortons? I have, and they’re a far cry from a latte crafted at 49th Parallel or Wicked Cafe (my two favs in Vancouver).
I (Jen) am a nurse. Imagine you needed a medication injection. Would you rather have me do it or would you trust your friend who says she can give it to you because she’s taken Tylenol before?
You’d probably prefer I do it because I’m a trained professional, I know anatomy, I know my equipment, and I’ve been giving injections for years. Right?
Nursing is an art and a science.
Many professions are.
Imagine wanting to build a new house. You hire an architect to design it, not a friend who might be good at sketching. The architect knows the science and has the artistic vision. She knows what works and what doesn’t, how to create and compose, and how to bring the artistic vision to reality.
So why would you trust your uncle or friend to capture your wedding instead of hiring a professional photographer?
bOB and I got into this conversation on the weekend because I went to a salon and had a consultation with a colourist about doing my hair for our upcoming wedding. This guy, Malcolm (whom I LOVE), listens to your ideas and your vision of what you would like, but he also looks at your skin tone, your face and hands, and he tells you honestly what he thinks would work for you and what would not. He’s been at this profession for 25 years, having trained specifically in being a colourist – he doesn’t even cut hair because he’s that specialized and he’s that passionate about having you look your best.
Sure, I could go to any run of the mill salon and say I want a deep dark burgundy red (that would essentially wash me out and make me look like death warmed over) and they’d do it for me, because they want the money.
Or I could go to someone who has the talent and skill, the extensive training, the vision, and the passion to do it right.
I don’t go to Tim Hortons for my latte. They’re great at what they do – but that is producing coffee and donuts for the masses.
I don’t get my friends to give me injections.
I care who colours my hair.
I’m sure your uncle is an excellent accountant and your friend is an awesome day care teacher. But just because they’ve bought a DSLR and can read the instruction booklet, are they professional photographers?
Pro photogs often joke about “Uncle Bob” showing up at a wedding and ruining the shots. Here’s one Uncle bOB you actually want taking your wedding photos. bOB graduated from art school in photography and illustration and has been a pro for 10 years. (And he just happens to be an uncle to my niece and nephews.)

Sneak Peek – Fantastic Wedding on the Water
May 28th, we photographed the wedding of Courtney and Steven, at Celebration on Water in North Vancouver. We were so lucky to have incredibly gorgeous weather, as the venue boasts a 360 degree view of downtown Vancouver, Stanley Park, the North Shore mountains, and more!
We couldn’t wait to get a sneak peek up of this amazing wedding – great scenery and an awesome good-looking couple! Congratulations Courtney and Steven!! Stay tuned for more!

Celebration on Water
On May 12, we went on a little excursion with our friend and event planner, Jenna (of Revel Events), to check out the new wedding and event venue, Celebration on Water. It’s essentially a large historic ferry boat, docked in North Vancouver, entirely redone and updated to be a gorgeous and unique venue for special events.
The Starboard Aft Lounge has room to shake your bootie over to the bar for a drink in between dances and the Forward Lounge (Star Trek TNG, anyone?) has room for a delightful dinner, all after the ceremony out on the deck with gorgeous 360 views of the North Shore mountains, downtown Vancouver, and Stanley Park! You cannot beat this view!!
The team there has thought of everything - There’s even suede on the ceilings! We were particularly impressed with the Bride’s room for getting ready – a chaise lounge completes it. There’s also a honeymoon room for a newly married couple to stay on the boat overnight after their wedding!
We have just a few pictures to show you for now. The real showcase will come after we have the honour of being the first to shoot a wedding there on May 28th! Stay tuned.

Our Awesome Photography Community
You know we’re engaged; we’ve blogged our Save the Date video.
I’ve been planning to write about our wedding planning – dress shopping adventures, funny stories, etc. – for some time now. This is not how I planned to begin blogging about our wedding but I wanted to share my gratitude for some of our fellow photographers in the Lower Mainland.
You might be surprised to learn that the photography community in and around Vancouver is pretty supportive. Already booked photographers who get inquiries for a particular date from engaged couples will refer happy couples to other local photogs. A large group of us meet up every other week for coffee and chatting (if we aren’t shooting!). We share information. We’re sometimes invited to each other’s parties. We goof around a bit on Twitter. It’s nice.
What does this have to do with blogging our wedding, you ask? Well, the other day, I received some very disappointing news that a very special family member will not be able to attend our August wedding. I was heartbroken. Already being on Twitter to check messages, I put up a quick tweet about my disappointment. The response was heartwarming and beyond that which I’d imagined. I was sent virtual hugs, brilliant positive images, and reasons to laugh. I felt supported and comforted by people whom industry outsiders would consider to be our competition. The kind responses of these kind folks helped me get through a difficult day.
And so, to you, Nick of The Other Angle Photography, Sarah of Silver Lamb Studios, Vicki of Ela Blue Photography, Karen of Amber Light Photography, Michelle of Studio 32 Photography, and Anna of Anna Beaudry Photographic Design (for an unrelated matter of support!), I say, “Thanks for lending me a hand.”

WPPI Vegas 2011
We had the amazing good fortune to attend WPPI in February. For the uninitiated, WPPI is an international association of wedding and portrait photographers to which we belong. The association holds a yearly trade show and lecture series with rockstar photographers and vendors from across the world!
In the next little while, we’ll be posting more detailed blogs about our adventures in Las Vegas but, for today, just a little taste of our time at WPPI.

Save the Date
Followers of ours on Twitter (@bobhomerphoto) and Facebook will know that we’re engaged!
If you’ve already read through our website, you’ll also know that we’re a bit geeky and offbeat. We even tell you on our About Us page that you can call us Mulder and Scully and, well, we pretty much mean it!
Check out our homage to the X-Files in our Save the Date for our upcoming Vancouver wedding!
Feel free to leave comments and let us know what you think!

More from the Granville Island Wedding
More shots from the August wedding of Jennifer and Scott. We had such a great time walking around Granville Island with them! So many people on the island stopped to wish the happy couple Congratulations as we strolled around. We were lucky to have a beautiful sunny Vancouver day!

Granville Island Wedding by bOB HOmer photography
Yesterday, August 14, 2010, we had the immense pleasure of capturing Jennifer and Scott’s wedding. They were cool customers in the blistering heat! Sense of adventure + sense of humour = awesome photo shoot with a couple that were an absolute delight! (Plus, they rocked our socks. We practically could have chosen the play list at the reception!) This is just a sneak peek – we couldn’t wait to share these with Jennifer and Scott! More to come!
